This country is fooling itself if we believe that all immigrants are bad. Based on our economy, immigrants are needed for certain jobs and provide stability. The problem is how to regulate them.
"Think of America's greatest historical shames. Most have involved the singling out of groups of people for abuse. Name a distinguishing feature--skin color, religion, nationality, language--and it's likely that people here have suffered unjustly for it, either through the freelance hatred of citizens or as a matter of official government policy."
Unfortunately we target all those who look like immigrants, every single Spanish-speaking person. Many ideas have come up on what to do with the status of the immigrants. Some say deport them all, others claim that giving them all amnesty is necessary, two big extremes for such a big issue.
People need to see that this issue will affect us whether we ant it to or not. We need to distinguish between the people who are actually trying to better their lives and those who take advantage of government aid. This issue has been ongoing and the more time it takes, the more adapted they come, the more influential they get, the bigger the role in society all the immigrants become.

It is unfortunate that we often overlook immigrants and toss them to the side. However, I don't agree with you that the problem is "regulating" them. I don't really like the usage of that term when we're discussing human beings. The issue at hand is our perception of immigrants and the process of legally immigrating to the United States. And you say that we need to distinguish those who are actually searching for a better life and those who are simply taking advantage of government aid....but how exactly would we tell the difference? And that distinction exists outside of the immigrant community....many native-born Americans "take advantage" of government aid. Immigration is a hot issue right now, with SO many different perspectives and opinions, so it's difficult to come to any sort of agreement.
I completely agree. Immigrants are so helpful to our country, but we truly overlook them. They take all the jobs that we do not want, and all they want to do is make enough money to survive. I do not think there is any harm in that. Really, we are all immigrants, so why don't we accept those who have just come to America?
Flavis, immagrants are vital to our society but recieve a very bad image in today's society. Like lea said we all came here as immagrants and the only thing that is different today that the new immagrants have darker skin. It is a very complex situation but one that needs to be dealt with.
because i think the world is politically correct enough as it is, i'm going to go ahead and say that we do need to 'regulate' immigration. obviously, theres no way this country would make it through complete amnesty, but the suffering caused by deporting every single immigrant would just be too much. as you said, we need to find some sort of middle ground. in my opinion, this lies in some sort of foreign worker program. this would allow for these people to continue to take care of their families back home (which is why the majority of them are here) without causing much harm to our economy.
